Getty Joe Alwyn and Hugh Laurie have joined the cast of an upcoming espionage thriller series! On Wednesday (June 10), Variety announced that Joe , 35, and Hugh , 66, are the last cast members to star in the upcoming BBC/MGM+ eight-part series Legacy of Spies , which is based on John le Carré ’s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold . Joe will be playing M16 agent Jim Prideaux while Hugh will be playing his spy agency boss Control. New cast additions also include Anjana Vasan , Charlotte Ritchie , Lee Ross , James McArdle , John Dagleish , and and Adam Hugill . What is Legacy of Spies about? Legacy of the Spies was first announced over a year ago in March 2025. The project is described as “an amalgamation of a number of le Carré ’s novels, including The Spy Who Came In From The Cold , Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy , and The Honorable Schoolboy , as well as others and some unpublished work,” according to Variety . The Ink Factory, which owns the rights to le Carré ’s work, is producing the project and Fifth Season is distributing the drama in both Europe and the United States. Who else will be starring? It was previously announced that Matthew Macfadyen would playing career intelligence officer George Smiley alongside Charlie Hunnam as field operative Alec Leamas, Daniel Brühl as Josef Fiedler and Dan Stevens as Bill Haydon. Back in April, it was announced that Joe Alwyn will be playing one of Juno Temple ‘s multiples husbands in the upcoming Apple TV series The Husbands ! Find out more about the project here .
