Why Hip-Hop Heads Might Recognize the Beat in ADÉLA’s New Hit ‘Nicole Kidman’

What do rising Slovakian pop star ADÉLA and Detroit’s Boldy James and Chicago’s G Herbo have in common? They’ve all rapped over the same sample. Now, it’s not like this is some crazy revelation, but it did take me a little bit to make the connection. Like most new songs these days, I came across ADÉLA’s “Nicole Kidman” song on social media, because damn near every baddie on the planet is using it to soundtrack their outfit videos and thirst traps. The beat and her catchy raps about feeling like the current international queen of cinema (I always get the sudden urge to stand up and salute when she pops up before a movie starts) immediately caught my attention, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I thought to myself, “Damn, this sound like some UGK s—t. Someone like Bun B would body this,” and even A&R’d a remix in my head with Doja Cat and Lil Wayne on it. But it wasn’t until I hit play on Boldy James and Conductor Williams’ 2024 soulful banger “ Terms and Conditions “— as I often do — that the light that was flickering in my brain finally stayed on. The beats aren’t identical, but the way the sample is chopped up is pretty similar, and I just thought that was a pretty cool coincidence. I mean, here you have Boldy just absolutely losing his mind over this rousing-ass Conductor beat talking about some fly street s—t – and two years later, a new pop star is also going off in her own right about some fly chick s—t over the same sample, on a song that’s become viral sensation. Producers Blake Slatkin and Dylan Brody haven’t talked about making the beat yet and ADÉLA has only really touched on getting inspiration for making “Nicole Kidman” after watching Stanley Kubrick’s classic film Eyes Wide Shut , but I would like to think that Slatkin and Brody were so riveted by bars like, “Was taught to always be the message I bring/ Pulled the sword from the stone, some n—as’ll never be king,” and “Stormin’ on the dice, full force, I’m like a tidal wave/ Owe my auntie Adrien for me shortin’ out her microwave/ 27-50-Z, n—as know we thick as thieves/ Real street n—as, never ratted, never bit the cheese,” that they were inspired to make a version for the game’s newest pop princess. While Conductor didn’t reveal the sample he used, he did break down what he was trying to accomplish with this beat. He often makes explainer videos for his YouTube channel and for this one he expressed that he wanted his soul chops to feel dramatic and big — while using predecessors Just Blaze and Bink! as examples, two guys who have become synonymous with this style of producing.
