Getty Cheri Oteri has breast cancer. The 63-year-old Saturday Night Live superstar comedian confirmed the diagnosis during an appearance on Chelsea Handler ‘s Dear Chelsea podcast. During the appearance, Cheri also opened up about how how she found support in Former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden , whom she met at a Milken Institute dinner in April. She described being at the event and hearing “all of these accomplished, powerful women” discussing healthcare around her. “And I’m just listening and listening to everybody speak. And it was the weirdest thing ‘cause I was just diagnosed with DCIS, with breast cancer,” she said. From the BCRF : “Of all breast cancer diagnoses in the country, 20-25 percent are ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). An estimated 59,080 new cases of DCIS will be diagnosed in women this year. Though it can be very stressful and alarming, DCIS is not life-threatening—practically all patients with stage 0 breast cancer can be cured.” “I’m staying there quiet, and I’m like, this is so serendipitous,” she continued to explain, saying that at the end of the dinner, she felt compelled to tell Jill about her diagnosis and planned surgery that month. “She said, ‘All right, you’re gonna get tired of me.’ And she says, ‘I’m going through this with you.’ This woman, like before my surgery, after my surgery, she just, she goes, ‘I am with you on this.’ I was blown away,” Cheri recalled. “And so we met at this coffee shop and we just talked for two hours, and she was just, that is a woman with a huge heart, and through everything, she’s like checking on me and just a beautiful human being. I’ve never felt so supported.” “She goes, ‘You’re gonna get sick of me texting you,’ and I’m like, ‘Seriously, Jill , knock it off,’” Cheri laughed. Cheri also said that she had to have a second surgery because it hadn’t all been removed the first time around, and she said she’s doing well, and didn’t even need to use the prescribed pain meds after.
