The late country music great John Anderson has gone, but his music will never die. That’s the sentiment from the country music community, as Anderson’s fans, friends and collaborators remember the pioneer and hitmaker who passed away Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the age of 71 . Born December 13, 1954, and raised in Apopka, FL, Anderson relocated to Nashville after he completed high school. It proved to be the right move. In 1976, Anderson signed with Warner Bros. Records, and would turn the pages of a songbook that includes “Swingin’,” “Straight Tequila Night,” “Seminole Wind,” and many others. A commercial success, he collected 20 top 10s on Billboard ‘s Hot Country Songs chart, including five No. 1s, and nabbed five top 10s on the Top Country Albums tally. In a career spanning almost five decades, Anderson filled his boots with industry plaudits, too, including the Academy of Country Music’s career achievement award in 1993, induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014, and elevation into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024 , a member of a class that included Toby Keith and James Burton. Blake Shelton led tributes for his close friend. “There is too much for me to say about John Anderson in just a statement. I am sick and I am stunned. But I am a very lucky man,” he writes on social media . “I got the opportunity to find out that my hero wasn’t just the guy I hoped he’d be. He was so much more than that. John was my friend.” Shelton collaborated with Anderson on the 2020 release “Tuesday I’ll Be Gone.” “I got to see him last Sunday and I don’t even know why but I told him I loved him,” he continues. “That is what fills my heart in this moment. My love and prayers go out to John’s family. This one really hurts.” John Rich produced Anderson’s 2007 album Easy Money , and admired the artist. “I’ve just learned that my favorite country artist of all time, and a man I called ‘Uncle John’ for the past 20 years has passed away,” the Big & Rich co-founder recounts . “The great and unmatched John Anderson…He loved Jesus, and his family and his country. He was a massive influence on me in more ways that I can count. I love you, Uncle John.” In a separate post, Rich shared a video of Big & Rich and Anderson’s performance of “Seminole Wind” for an episode of CMT Crossroads. Like Shelton, Tim McGraw caught up with Anderson last Sunday night at the Country Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony. “He was in such good spirits. We talked, we laughed, we sang his songs that I loved so much together, just goofing off,” McGraw writes on Facebook . “I am completely heartbroken by his passing. There will never be a stylist in music, any music, that was so defining as his. It’s just devastating. All of our love goes out to his family and the country music community. He was and is one of the defining voices in country music. So great. I am com
