There are many people better than I am who do not receive the recognition they deserve. The opportunities I was given, along with the talent of others, helped me create and develop my career as a musician, singer, and songwriter.” “No one becomes an icon without help,” the legendary singer-songwriter added, before listing and expressing his gratitude to all the musical groups and projects he had been a part of: Papi Arosemena and Conjunto Latino, Tito Cowes and his Combo Impacto, Tuti Delgado and Los Salvajes del Ritmo, Francisco Buckley “Bush” and his Magníficos, Pete Rodríguez y Orquesta, Ray Barretto y Orquesta, Willie Colón y Orquesta, the Fania All-Stars, Seis del Solar, Son del Solar, and Roberto Delgado y Orquesta. “Thanks to my family, my wife Luba, my colleagues, my friends, my teachers and mentors, Latin America, Panama, the world and everyone who supports us — and who has supported us all this time.” Blades concluded his remarks by paraphrasing the late, legendary Mexican singer and actor Pedro Vargas: “As the ‘Immortal Tenor of the Americas’ used to say: ‘Very grateful, very grateful, very grateful.’” He also channeled the Panamanian percussionist Raúl “Toto” Rivera, mimicking his distinctive way of saying the word “gracias.” Over more than five decades, Blades has been one of the most influential voices in Latin music, contributing to the redefinition of salsa through a unique combination of musical innovation and powerful storytelling. As a central figure in New York’s salsa revolution of the 1970s, the Panamanian singer, songwriter and musician expanded the horizons of classic Afro-Cuban salsa by incorporating influences from rock, jazz, pan-Latin music and sounds from various parts of the world. His songs have stood out not only for their unforgettable melodies but also for their socially conscious lyrics and memorable characters that turned everyday life stories into timeless music.
