Getty Serena Williams is speaking out about her decision to return to singles tennis. The 44-year-old tennis icon addressed reporters at a press conference on Sunday (June 28) ahead of Wimbledon. “I thought I should really take this opportunity. Who knows if I’ll ever make it here again. This could be it,” she admitted to the journalists,” via AP. “I was like, ‘What’s wrong with me, Serena ? What are you thinking? Are you nuts? Like, you really should do this.’” “People live to be an athlete. I have this great opportunity to showcase what I do, what I do best, I suppose. Yeah, I think ultimately I was like that is pretty cool, so I should do it,” Serena explained. Her first match at the Grand Slam since 2022 will take place on Tuesday (June 30), where she will face off against Australia’s Maya Joint , 20. The match is scheduled as the third match on Centre Court, starting at approximately noon ET. “I have so much respect for her. She was one of my idols growing up, I’m just really excited to have the opportunity to play against her… Serena is still an amazing player, so I’m sure it’s going to be a difficult match but I also think that I have a chance to win,” her young opponent said in response to the news. Serena ‘s husband Alexis Ohanian was one of the celebrities and public figures in attendance at the White House’s UFC event, which was held on Donald Trump ‘s 80th birthday. Now, Ohanian is one of those celebrities who has released a statement after being spotted in the crowd.
