In 1776, the founding fathers declared the birth of a nation called the United States — and 182 years later, Billboard debuted the Billboard Hot 100 chart to keep track of all of the songs that have been the most popular in the country on any given week. And among the tens of thousands of tracks that have appeared on the U.S. songs tally since it launched in 1958, there have been many with patriotic titles paying homage to the country in which they’d become hits. So in honor of the Land of the Free’s fast-approaching 250th birthday on Saturday (July 4), we’re taking a look at which of those performed the best on the Hot 100 by rounding up the top 25 highest-peaking and longest-running songs with either “America” or “U.S.A” in the name. There’ve been plenty more smashes that had patriotic messages but didn’t include either of those monikers in the title, which were not factored into this list — except for one notable exception. We had to include Whitney Houston’s iconic Super Bowl rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” because, come on, it’s the national anthem, for goodness’ sake. So with 250 years of American history and more than six decades of chart data to inform us, keep reading to see the top 25 “America” or “USA” songs to ever appear on the Hot 100 — including their individual peaks and, in the cases of No. 1s, how many weeks they spent at the top — below. This ranking is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. To ensure equitable representation of the biggest hits from each era, certain time frames were weighted to account for the difference between turnover rates from those years.
