Shark Week is getting a K-pop twist. The track arrives before K-Pop Shark Heroes, a new Shark Week special that will explore how K-pop can assist in changing public perceptions of sharks across East Asia and beyond. The special mixes comedy with K-pop inspired performances and educational narration as part of Discovery’s annual Shark Week lineup. The song also features a special appearance from Grammy-nominated artist REI AMI, who fans may recognize as a member of the fictional K-Pop girl group HUNTR/X from Netflix’s breakout animated film KPop Demon Hunters. REI AMI’s appearance comes as KPop Demon Hunters continues to appeal to fans following the film’s breakout success. In addition to voicing and performing as Rumi in HUNTR/X, the Grammy-nominated artist has continued to expand her solo career. “Om-A-Nom (Shark Week)” marks an unexpected crossover between K-pop and cable TV. According to Discovery, K-Pop Shark Heroes follows Jeong as he adopts “the power of K-Pop to transform the perception of sharks in East Asia and across the globe.” The special pairs Jeong’s humor with music inspired by the global phenomenon, culminating in the debut of “Om-A-Nom (Shark Week).” K-Pop Shark Heroes premieres Sunday (July 26) at 8 p.m. ET on Discovery as part of the network’s annual Shark Week.
