Netflix Netflix will be releasing the Cannes Film Festival hit La Bola Negra later this year and the film will make history for the streamer. The company will give the movie a U.S. theatrical release on October 16 ahead of a Netflix streaming premiere on December 2, marking the longest theatrical window ever for a Netflix movie. Penelope Cruz appears in the acclaimed film, which translates to The Black Ball in English. La Bola Negra was directed, co-written and produced by the Spanish duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (popularly known as Los Javis). They won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival and the film was nominated for the Palme d’Or. A bold tapestry spanning nearly a century of Spanish history, La Bola Negra tells the story of three generations of men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain, and love. The film takes place in three different eras – 1932, 1937, and 2017. Spanish music sensation Guitarricadelafuente makes his acting debut in the film alongside Elite star Miguel Bernardeau . The ensemble cast also includes Glenn Close. La Bola Negra currently holds an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 32 reviews from the Cannes Film Festival. It will soon be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Penelope will be honored with a Special Tribute Award at the TIFF Tribute Awards.
