How Did Charli xcx’s First-Week ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ Performance Meet Our Expectations?

For the second summer in three years, Charli xcx has dominated the pop discussion with a new release. This year, it’s with Music, Fashion, Film , her much-anticipated official follow-up to 2024’s culturally ubiquitous Brat , and her second full-length release of 2026 following February’s Wuthering Heights soundtrack. And now, Music, Fashion, Film has also tied the chart peak of Brat with its No. 3 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The set moved 75,000 units in its first frame, making it the highest-bowing new entry on the chart this week (dated Aug. 8) — though it falls behind Morgan Wallen’s I’m the Problem and Olivia Rodrigo’s You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love , in their 63rd and seventh week on the chart, respectively. How does this debut compare to our expectations for Music, Fashion, Film ? And do we think Charli will score a No. 1 album in the future? Billboard staffers discuss these questions and more below. 1. Charli xcx’s Music, Fashion, Film bows at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 this week with 75,000 first-week units, tying the mark she set in 2024 with her previous album Brat . Are those numbers higher than, lower than or about what you would have expected? Katie Bain : Obviously the expectation was huge following Brat , and I’m sure that anticipation did a lot to lift this new set. But given that it’s an experimental rock album — not always a barnburner of a genre on this chart — I think No. 3 feels just about right. Eric Renner Brown : I am not surprised by this number in a vacuum, but I am surprised the number didn’t exceed Brat ‘s first-week tally. Charli’s fans got Brat immediately, but it wasn’t an instant hit; Brat summer didn’t truly hit until a couple weeks after its release. Considering how much Charli’s star rose with Brat , I would’ve thought these first-week numbers would be higher – but perhaps her releasing the Wuthering Heights soundtrack earlier this year took some of the wind out of Music, Fashion, Film’ s sails. Kyle Denis : Considering the stark change in musical direction and the lack of a true breakout hit, these numbers are about what I expected from Music, Fashion, Film . Lyndsey Havens : I would have expected a post- Brat boost into a six-figure debut week. But I think anything that isn’t a drop off is excellent for Charli — or any artist, really — and well worth celebrating. Plus, that 75,000 figure becomes more impressive when you consider how stripped back this album’s rollout was in comparison to Brat; Charli not only created a vastly different world in terms of sound and visuals, but also in terms of how she presented and promoted it to the world. The fact that this lesser approach still yielded such a strong debut week speaks well to interest surrounding the music itself. Andrew Unterberger : No. 3 is actually maybe a little higher
