A Broadway musical adaptation of the beloved movie 10 Things I Hate About You is coming to the Great White Way next summer. On Monday morning (Aug. 17), producer Mike Bosner announced that the show will begin performances on Aug. 17, 2027, with a book co-written by Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham ( Girls ) and award-winning playwright Jessica Huang ( Mother of Exiles ). In addition, Grammy nominee Carly Rae Jepsen will team up with Grammy-winner Ethan Gruska (boygenius) to write the project’s music and lyrics, with Tony winner Christopher Wheeldon ( MJ The Musical ) on hand as director and choreographer and Grammy winner Tom Kitt ( Next to Normal ) on board for music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations. Like the original 1999 film that launched the careers of Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Heath Ledger — a clever, modern retelling of Shakespeare’s 1594 play The Taming of the Shrew — the musical will take viewers back to the halls of Padua High, where amidst “crushes, cliques, and teenage angst, two sisters set out to define themselves on their own terms,” according to a release announcing the project. “This rebellion new musical is about growing up, discovering yourself, and refusing to live by others’ expectations.” The original famously featured late actor Ledger serenading Stiles on the football field with a sweet, croony cover of Frankie Valli’s Billboard Hot 100 1967 No. 2 smash “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” beginning with an elegant fireman’s pole slide and exploding into a full-on musical epic thanks to an assist by the school marching band. Casting and additional creative team and theater information will be announced at a later date.
