Getty A$AP Rocky is kicking off his new tour. The 37-year-old rapper kicked off his Don’t Be Dumb Tour on Wednesday night (May 27) at United Center in Chicago, Ill. A$AP Rocky’s massive undertaking included a ton of spectacle and props “In the first few minutes of opening night in Chicago on Wednesday, there was a succession of flashbang fireworks, two helicopters (doubling up the rapper’s go-to prop), bright searchlights and blinding reds and blues, loud alarm sound effects and a 50-person backup crew dressed as a militarized SWAT team that took over the United Center,” The Chicago Sun-Times reports. “We designed this show so every view is the perfect view, no matter where you at,” he told the crowd. There were plenty of powerful political statements throughout the set “The rapper seems to drive that point home in the album and tour aesthetics, with references to police, Jim Crow and inequality, particularly on songs like the solemn ‘The End.’ As the police team zeroed in on their suspect at the UC, video screens carried a faux livestream of the action while the rapper evaded it in a mid-stage compound set up with surveillance cameras and upside American flags, near banners that read, ‘Big Brother is Always Watching,'” the Chicago Sun-Times noted in their review. The Chicago Tribune called it “an over-the-top, sometimes unsteady two-hour concert.” The Source said: “ A$AP Rocky ’s tour opener was grimy, cinematic, chaotic and occasionally thrilling. It was also sloppy, uneven and too self-conscious about its own mistakes. The best version of this show is clearly in there, and with a few more nights on the road, it may become the kind of fully realized spectacle Rocky was aiming for.” He worked through an impressive 40 songs in the over two hour show, including “Praise the Lord (Da Shine),” “Sundress” and “Fukk Sleep.” The 42-date tour is being promoted by Live Nation, and is in support of the rap star’s first studio album in nearly a decade.
