A24 The new horror movie Backrooms is now in theaters and it’s shattering box office records in its first weekend. The film, directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons when he was only 19, has a chilling premise: a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom, leading into a disorienting and seemingly endless maze of rooms. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve lead the cast, alongside Mark Duplass , Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell . The movie is based on Kane ‘s viral Backrooms series on YouTube , which gained massive attention online for its unsettling liminal space horror concept. The movie grossed $38 million on its opening day on Friday, May 29, including $10.4 million from Thursday night previews. After just one day, the movie shattered film studio A24’s record for biggest opening weekend, which was previously held by 2024’s Civil War with $25.5 million. A24’s top-grossing movie of all time is Marty Supreme , which made $96 million in its domestic run. Backrooms will likely surpass that number after four or five days in theaters.
