Mariko Hayashi’s 80-dai ni Naru to Taitei Bokeru ka Shinu. 70-dai wa Kamisama kara Ataerareta Tokubetsuna Jikan hits No. 1 on the Billboard Japan Book Hot 100 released Aug. 20. The essay collection — whose title roughly means “most people in their 80s end up with dementia or dead. your 70s are a special gift from god” — was released in May. The veteran writer, now 72 years old, speaks candidly on health, fashion, work, money, personal connections and hobbies. A string of television appearances this week drove the title to lead brick-and-mortar while collecting points across all five metrics including e-commerce (EC), e-books, subscriptions and social media. The title claims the top spot in its 11th chart week and marks the first time a shinsho (a compact nonfiction paperback format) title has topped the chart. Izumi Tsubaki’s Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun Vol. 18 follows at No. 2, placing No. 2 in both brick-and-mortar and EC. Keigo Higashino’s 2023 novel Anata ga Dareka wo Koroshita enters at No. 3 following the release of its paperback edition. Higashino, who passed away at age 68 on July 23, places two other titles in the top 20 this week: Eien no Kioku at No. 6 and Hakucho to Komori ( Guilt ) Vol. 1 at No. 20. The Billboard Japan Book Hot 100 is a comprehensive chart combining physical sales, e-books, library loans, subscription data and social media activity.
