Few musical traditions hold that contradiction as powerfully: The grief is theatrical, the romance is all-consuming and the celebration is impossible to resist. To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, kicking off Tuesday (Sept. 15) — as well as Mexico’s Independence Day on Sept. 16 — Billboard Latin and Billboard Español present the 50 Best Mariachi Songs of All Time. Born in western Mexico and rooted in Guadalajara, Jalisco, mariachi rose from regional folk tradition to national symbol. It reached an even wider audience during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, which begins with the 1936 film Allá En El Rancho Grande , which featured the title song performed by singer and actor Tito Guízar — who graced the cover of Billboard in 1946.
