Dave Matthews , Trey Anastasio and Chris Stapleton all performed at Manhattan’s Cipriani on Tuesday night (Sept. 15) — but at the annual T.J. Martell Foundation New York Honors Gala, none of these stars were the headliner. Rather, it was the more than $3 million that the night’s attendees, who hailed from every corner of the music business, raised for the organization’s mission of cancer research. Also above Matthews, Anastasio and Stapleton on the bill: Red Light Management founder Coran Capshaw , who represents all three musicians and received the lifetime music industry award at the event. Martell’s chair of the board of trustees, at the start of the evening. “Coran Capshaw has built Red Light Management into a powerhouse through brilliant entrepreneurship and an unwavering commitment to his artists. But what makes Coran particularly worthy of being honored is what he has done with his success. You see, Coran gives back. Coran and his artists have an incredible spirit of philanthropy supporting so many worthy causes.” The foundation, Gawley revealed, had broken the fundraising record it had set with the event in 2024 “and making this the most successful Martell gala in more than two decades.” Later, foundation vice chair Julie Swidler shared that the organization has raised more than $300 million to date for its cause. Capshaw’s quiet, humble approach to philanthropy was a recurring theme of the night. In a charmingly improvised speech introducing the executive, Matthews joked about Capshaw’s understated, concise mannerisms — but soon turned to a more profound story. After “the Nazis came to town” for the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., where Capshaw and Matthews both hail from, “Coran said, ‘We have to do something,'” Matthews recalled. “Within a month, we had a concert,” Matthews continued, detailing A Concert For Charlottesville, the September 2017 event Capshaw helped to assemble that featured Coldplay , Justin Timberlake , Ariana Grande , Stevie Wonder and several other icons. “Some of you that know us would know there was a concert, but a lot of people didn’t know, because it wasn’t in the papers, it wasn’t on TV. Because that was not the point. He wanted to do something that would be a healing thing for the town.” Upon taking the stage, Capshaw, who famously prefers to stay behind the scenes, revealed that he was initially
